John Whitaker

Hello, my name is John Whitaker. I am an army veteran of Iraq/Afghanistan with a B.S. in International Affairs from Georgia Institute of Technology, have worked 6 years as a security guard in NYC and have recently graduated New York Law School in May 2019. I am looking for a position in legal services but I am open to a position in International Affairs, Veteran Services or Security Operations. 

In New York Law School I specialized in aspects of both international law and public service law. This included international arbitration, international criminal law and immigration, housing, and family law. As part of my studies I also served an internship with Legal Services, NYC, by assisting veterans in housing court, served with NYS Court Access to Justice program in family law and participated in both non-profit studies as well as a Legislative Advocacy clinic for the ACLU.

As a veteran I am an active participant in Team RWB and have organized non-profit activities for elderly and disabled veterans at the St Albans Veterans Home. As a student I was Vice-President of the Military Justice and Veterans Association at NYLS and have attempted to cultivate contacts and partnerships between various organizations, including Mission Continues, United Veterans War Council, American Legion, NYC Veterans Alliance and provide information on veterans benefits and events to others in the veteran community.

During my time in the military I worked as a Company Intelligence Support Team member, interacting with local civilians to implement public programs as part of the Army’s development mission and following security and bureaucratic guidelines to support these programs in the local community. In Georgia Tech I also earned an International Affairs Degree, studied comparative governmental practices, and have had practical experience in the area of civil-public relations. As Internal Revenue Service Tax Examiner I was charged with processing, correcting and flagging of 1040 tax returns for the IRS. This required efficient use of accounting and research skills and a high standard of workplace production and qualitative efficiency. 

Finally, as a security officer I worked for the last five years in Manhattan in hotel and public transportation centers. This frequently involved working with members of the NYPD to respond to public issues and complaints.
